Higher abundance of some species of larvae in the artificial vegetation may reflect both the use of vegetation as spawning substrate and increased availability of food or shelter. Water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and transparency, measured concurrently with sampling did not seem to directly influence larval distribution. Cyprinids (carp and goldfish) and sunfish were collected primarily from artificially vegetated habitats, usually floating vegetation in 1984 and emergent vegetation in 1985. Gizzard shad and crappie were collected most often from open water areas of the marsh during both years of sampling. Larval gizzard shad ( Dorosoma cepedianum), crappie ( Pomoxis spp.), sunfish ( Lepomis spp.) carp ( Cyprinus carpio), and goldfish ( Carassius auratus) were the most abundant taxa in samples, collectively comprising over 94% of the total catch during both 19. Influences of habitat and selected physical and chemical variables on distribution of fish larvae were evaluated during spring and summer, 1984–85 in a diked Lake Erie wetland by determining densities of larvae in three simulated vegetation types and open water. ![]()
